Bucky's Movie Contract Fuels Speculation on Upcoming Capt America Movies

Actor Chris Evans recently announced that his contract with Marvel is for six movies, and that he might take a break from playing Captain America after it's done. We didn't think anything of it... until today, when Sebastian Stan, who played Bucky in the first film, suddenly announced his contract is for nine films.

Um... the hell?

Look, nothing is set in stone here, and it's very possible than Marvel will drive a dump truck full of money to bring Evans back on for Captain America 4 (they've done that with Robert Downey Jr. at least once by now) or even more movies. But it does seem weird that Evans' recent announcement about his possible break from the role was followed so quickly by the news of Stan's astonishing nine-picture deal.

Not too long ago in the comics, Bucky did take the mantle of Captain America for a time. Will this also happen in Marvel's cinematic universe? Have they already been planning for Evans' departure from the role? If not, what on Stan Lee's green Earth does Marvel have in mind for the character of Bucky that requires a nine-picture deal?

Spoilers if I'm right: Steve Rogers dies (or appears to) at the end of Captain America 3. Bucky fills in as Cap for Captain America 4 and an Avengers film or two. Evans gets his break, and Rogers comes back to the cinematic universe just like he did when this happened in the comics, probably over the course of Captain America 5.

Thoughts?

Nightwing makes his debut on Arrow

Jeez, Arrow is becoming the DC-TV universe's way to springboard superheroes.

Not content with Black Canary, Arsenal, the Huntress, Deathstroke, Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, China White, Doctor Ivo, or upcoming characters like The Flash and Amanda Waller, Arrowhas just added Batman's protégé Nightwing to its ever-increasing cast, to be played by Steve McQueen of The Vampire Diaries fame.

But will DC's TV universe be kept separate from the DC Movie universe? With rumor's swirling that Man Of Steel 2 could have some Bat-family cameo's, could we see McQueen on the big screen. And lord knows Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen would have to play a key role in Superman v. Batman, albeit an older, less heroic and more alcoholic, version of himself.

Netflix adds Marvel to it's original series with Daredevil.

Marvel keeps making really great decisions. Drew Goddard is currently in talks to write the new Daredevil series for Netflix. Seriously whatever he wants, JUST GIVE IT TO HIM.
Continuing with last week's announcement that Marvel will be making four new superhero series for Netflix, The Wrap is reporting that Cabin in the Woods director Goddard is currently in talks to pen the Daredevil one. Honestly we're so in love with this idea we may pitch a fit on the grocery store floor if this doesn't go through. Just think of the quippy one-liners and freedom from studio nitpicking that Netflix would offer up a mind like Goddard? Seriously the man is completely demented in all the best possible ways — just read what he wrote on io9 during our live chat.
Both Marvel and Goddard camps declined comment to The Wrap, HOWEVER Goddard has spoken about Daredevil before to Collider (via BadAss) stating:
"You're talking to a guy who had quotes from Daredevil painted on his wall while growing up... Even when I was 18, I still had the blood red door with the, 'I have shown him that a man without hope is a man without fear.'"
Please, please, please make it so.

Marvel Teams Up With Netflix For Four Original Series And A Mini-Series Event

Thanks to a landmark deal announced today between Netflix and The Walt Disney Company’s Marvel TV, several popular Marvel Comics characters will get their own serialized live-action series on the streaming platform beginning in 2015, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones (who starred in Brian Michael Bendis’ critically acclaimed comic Alias before moving over to The Avengers), Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Each of the four characters will get their own 13-episode series, which will then culminate in a mini-series event based on the Marvel franchise The Defenders that “reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.”

If that sounds somewhat like The Avengers, you’re correct. Well, sort of. While the film franchise The Avengers — operating under the watchful eye of director Joss Whedon — poses intergalactic threats like the Chitauri invasion, these shows seem to offer a decidedly more street-level view of the Marvel cinematic universe, introducing characters who operate out of New York City’s Hell Kitchen. While no mention was made of the tone of each of these series, expect a far grittier feel than, say, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the ratings-troubled drama about the high-flying agents of an espionage agency that operates out of a helicarrier.

Daredevil — based on blind lawyer Matt Murdock who battles criminals as an acrobatic man without fear — will be the first to get his time in the spotlight in 2015, followed by Jessica Jones, a private investigator-and-sometimes-superhero who has gone by the codenames Jewel, Knightress, and Power Woman, as well as Iron Fist and Luke Cage, two brawlers who have often been partnered up in the comics. (The former is a martial artist gifted with the ability to concentrate his chi in his fist; the latter has unbreakable skin; both were introduced in the 1970s.)

No word was given on the financials of the deal, though both sides praised the “unparalleled” scope of such a content offering. “This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling,” said Alan Fine, president of Marvel Entertainment, in a statement. “Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

For its part, Netflix drew parallels between this deal and what the streaming platform is doing in terms of its own original programming, which includes House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, and several others. “Marvel’s movies, such as Iron Man and Marvel’s The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With House of Cards and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

It’s worth noting that ABC had previously attempted to develop a live-action series based on Jessica Jones entitled A.K.A. Jessica Jones, which never got out of the script stage, and Ben Affleck starred in a Daredevil feature film for 20th Century Fox, which was spun-off into a starring vehicle for Jennifer Garner as Elektra. For longtime comics fans, it will be interesting to see just how integrated and interconnected these series wind up being — given the longstanding comics connections between Luke, Danny, Jessica, and Matt — as they lead to The Defenders event. *Thanks to Buzzfeed for the article

Nintendo does Star Wars in this Super Smash Wars Mash Up

Jeez, if only Hayden Christensen could be swapped out for Link, then maybe the new episodes would be salvageable. Enjoy this amazing animation by the brilliant James Farr as Nintendo does Star Wars.

Bryan Singer tries to Fix the past with the first X-Men: Days of Futures Past trailer

How about a little less bitter-hippie Prof. Xavier and little more Bolivar Trask with Sentinels.

Justice League War trailer

The New 52 goes animated thanks to the success of straight-to-video Flashpoint. And no, I have no idea why Wonder Woman would be dressed like that. It's definitely not her new 52 costume, but about just as practical. Still, who doesn't love Alan Tudyk voicing Superman. Thanks to io9 for the link.

Neuromancer movie moving forward with Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg

The movie version of William Gibson's ground-breaking book Neuromancer is apparently moving forward — the production company GFM Films has devoted an entire page to the film:

http://www.gfmfilms.co.uk/films/pre-production/neuromancer/

The other piece of info on the page? A news item confirming that Liam Neeson has been offered the role of Armitage, and Mark Wahlberg has been offered the role of Case. These are both "pay or play" offers — apparently meaning that if the film doesn't get made, Neeson and Wahlberg still get money.

For those unfamiliar with the novel, it's a staple in the cyber-punk genre, crossing the Blade Runner distopian society with Johnny Mnemonic/Ghost in the Shell net intergration. Its a massive work, setting the standard for the next 30 years in the cyber punk ethos.

Mutant Short "The Gate" Gets Full Length Treatment

From I09:

What it's about: The redundant genes in your body get activated, and mutant freaks roam the streets, thanks to pharmaceutical companies, in this weird and alarming short movie.

Status: As we reported recently, Wayfare Entertainment picked this film up for a full theatrical version, with the same director on board.

Prognosis: Just watch the original short for yourself. It's pretty nuts.

Godzilla + Voltron – Cats = The Official Synopsis of Pacific Rim

From i09
The first official synopsis for Guillermo del Toro's monsters versus robots movie Pacific Rim is out. Boiled down, the whole thing is about giant robots piloted by different teams of humans struggling to fight strange monsters funneling out of the sea. This movie is going to be massive:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") is directing "Pacific Rim" from a script by Travis Beacham ("Clash of the Titans"). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV's "Sons of Anarchy"), Idris Elba ("Thor"), Rinko Kikuchi ("The Brothers Bloom"), Charlie Day ("Horrible Bosses"), and Ron Perlman (the "Hellboy" films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. Del Toro's behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

This could very well be the bigger, better, and more heartfelt Transformers. Pacific Rim is slated to come out July 2013.

Archetype by Aaron Sims

The Aaron Sims Company has designed such celluloid creatures as the aliens from Green Lantern, the simians from Rise of The Planet of The Apes, and the samurai with the chain gun from Sucker Punch. Now, as a labor of love with no funding, Sims has directed Archetype, a short film about a battlefield robot whose programming is on the fritz. It's an absolutely stunning nugget of cinema.

We heard about this project, which stars Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI:NY) and David Anders (Heroes, 24), several months back. What's more, he's planning a feature-length version. Here's a plot synopsis:

RL7 is an eight-foot tall combat robot that goes on the run after malfunctioning with vivid memories of once being human. As its creators and the military close in, RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its mysterious visions and past.
